Waves at Bateau Bay

Artist Statement: I have been painting the sea all my life, since 1975. 40 years later, coral reefs around the world are bleaching and the sea itself is rising.  This painting is a tribute to Brett Whiteley. It’s like the paintings I did when I met him

For about 2 years I painted nothing but the sea and waves. I used to camp for months at a time in peaceful isolated coastal locations. Brett Whiteley used to make drawings and ink sketches for his wild dark blue and white wave paintings at Bateau bay. Then I went to Europe and met Francis Bacon in London and Salvadoor Dali in Figueras Spain. I liked Dali a lot. He was sweet and gentle, and very eloquent and humorous. He inspired me to go beyond realism. -Phil Clarke

CHG Director's Statement: From world renowned, high society artist Phil Clarke - who calls Salvador Dali a friend - comes this exciting new selection of surreal art. Just take Dali and Warhol, then add Robert Rauschenberg, and stir… VOILA! You’ve got the brilliant surreal-ness of Phil Clarke.

Allan Hogan, Introduction: Phil Clarke always has an entertaining and whimsical insight into the human condition. That’s not surprising, given that Phil lived for ten years in the Spanish village of Cadaques where Dali and his wife Gala entertained a passing parade of artists and hippies.
This is Phil’s first exhibition for eight years in his home town of Sydney, and it seems to me that these are paintings for the Ages. They’re not the product of the latest fashion in art. These are sensitive and compassionate images about love and war and people, and the world around us. Continue reading here.
