Firstly the detail of the brushwork combined with its clarity of colour adds to its almost 3d character; It is gem like. The horizontal bands of clear colouring and spaces give further depth. There is no harshness of outback colouring in this work only the suggestion of red brown earth on the other side of the riverbank. It is a sound example of his painting theme, which features the waterbirds in the foreground only.
