CHG Director’s Statement: Clarice Beckett (1887-1935) was an Australian painter whose works are currently exhibited in prestigious spaces such as the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of South Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria. Part of the Australian Tonalist movement, she studied under the Art Gallery of NSW Archibald Prizewinner, Max Meldrum.

Beckett used mists, diffusing lights, delicate sunsets and common sights from everyday life in her paintings. She had very little success in selling her art and was repeatedly criticized in her lifetime. Now, Clarice Beckett is recognized as one of Australia’s most important modernist painters.

Beckett was only 48 at the time of her death. A memorial exhibition was organized in her remembrance by her father and sister at the Athenaeum Gallery in 1936. In a major exhibition in 1971 at the Rosalind Galleries in Melbourne, National Gallery of Canberra purchased a group of her works.
