The Swimmers I
Artist's Statement: Paul Haggith is a contemporary realist painter whose work is based on water, landscape, figurative and cityscape themes. The sea, people and their habitat inspire me. These elements permeate my art. While the summer beaches are a continual element, they are punctuated with retro buildings from my past and recent visits to islands in the Pacific and Indian oceans. I see these works as contemporary realism, flattening the picture plane and avoiding traditional focal points. Then bathing the image in the warm glow of sunlight.
Medium: Oil on Belgian linen

Andrew Frost: The Art Life: Haggith asks us to contemplate the shapes and coincidences of the compositions as swathes of colour and line and to doubt the veracity of the image-it's here, in their transformation of the banal into the remarkable that the pictures really take off.
