Artwork comment: Subject is a German shore party from the German cruiser The Emden. The shore party was sent to Navigation Island in the Cocos Island group in the Indian Ocean in 1914 to destroy the islands radio. The Emden was destroyed by the HMAS Sydney before the shore party could rejoin the ship. The Emden run aground at North Island close to the cocos islands where it was finished off by the Sydney. (A group of 50 Seamen never rejoined the Emden as it engaged in battle).
