Phil Stallard

30350

Artist's Statement: My intention for the show was to do a quintessential suburban pool painting, I did many studies of backyards with sweeping courtyards, Tuscany landscaping and driveways – it would be my big Hockney riposte. It was not to be, I was seduced with my old friend turquoise and the colour just took over. The subject matter disappeared (now with only vague references to my neighbours pool) and became almost pure abstraction, meditations of idle days in a sun drenched land swimming in pools in the full ironic glare of a global warming sun. - Phil Stallard

CHG Director's Statement: Expressive, bursts of energy, strength of colour, and wall power are just some of the adjectives or phrases to describe Phil Stallard’s paintings. His style will refresh any interior with exciting incendiary like bursts of colour and tone! - Mark Widdup.

"There is a "total experience" in a Phil Stallard painting, a similar notion that no part of the painting is bland, or subordinate, or to be passed over. Stallard's work is very painterly indeed. His oil-paint is applied with a fluid lushness, a sensuousness, that recalls 1960’s Brett Whiteley." - Peter Pinson, OAM.
