Directors Statement: Criss Canning, born in Melbourne 1947, is one of Australia’s leading still-life artists, who composes distinctive artworks featuring flora and unique objects. Incredibly accomplished, Criss has devoted the past 50 years to painting. Working with oils, each brushstroke is thoughtfully applied with colour-laden gestures to create two and three dimensional forms. The subject matter in Criss’ work – the flowers, ceramics, trays and fabrics are arranged to effortlessly create seductive textures and balanced still-life compositions.
