Directors Statement: Anthony Datillo-Rubbo, born in Naples in 1870, studied at The Royal Academy, Naples in 1893 - 97, before moving to Sydney, where he founded an art school in 1898 and maintained it for 43 years. He also taught at The Royal Art Society for 28 years. Although academic in his methods, he was never restrictive. His students included de Maistre, Wakelin, Cossington Smith, Friend, Murch and many others who went on to become successful painters. A large collection of his work is in the Manly Art Gallery and his work was seen in The Great Australian Art Exhibition, 1988-89. Datillo-Rubbo passed away in Sydney in 1955.
