CHG Directors Statement: Artist, designer for the Theatre As a painter, Max Hurley has been called a Fantastic Realist – with an element of fantasy in most of his works, even those dealing with more traditional subjects. Max has exhibited in galleries in Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.As well as being represented in collections in Australia, England and the United States. As a designer for the Theatre, Max has designed for the Marionette Theatre of Australia, Queensland Opera Company, Queensland Ballet Company, (Queensland Light Opera), Ballet Theatre of Queensland and Brisbane City Youth Ballet. Furthermore, has designed for the Twelfth Night Theatre, Brisbane Arts Theatre an for La Boite.He has lectured on Theatre design at the Queensland Conservatorium and, as Artist in Residence (Theatre Design) at Wesley College, Perth, WA. For a period of Twenty years Max has also designed and built the well known and much appreciated animated Christmas windows at Myer Valley and Queens Street Stores. Currently, Max is occupied with book illustration and a new project for the Brisbane City Youth Ballet
