Lush water

Phil Stallard

1

Artist's Statement: In this painting I used a memory of an afternoon I had with my kids at Woolwich (in Sydney) down on the water. There is an old dry dock with a cutting going deep into the rockface, we went down there, and I remember being mesmerised by the colour of the water, later in the studio I started painting. I left the vague memory of the ship yard, using the colour of this memory I let the painting develop so the memory co-exists alongside big gestural abstract elements. The water dilutes everything, and the painting got close to the feeling of being mesmerised by the lusciousness of that place.

CHG Director's Statement: Expressive, bursts of energy, strength of colour, and wall power are just some of the adjectives or phrases to describe Phil Stallard’s paintings. His style will refresh any interior with exciting incendiary like bursts of colour and tone! - Mark Widdup.

"There is a "total experience" in a Phil Stallard painting, a similar notion that no part of the painting is bland, or subordinate, or to be passed over. Stallard's work is very painterly indeed. His oil-paint is applied with a fluid lushness, a sensuousness, that recalls 1960’s Brett Whiteley." - Peter Pinson, OAM.
