CHG Director’s Statement: David Boyd was a member of the Boyd artistic dynasty. He began his art career when he attended the Melba Memorial Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne at age 17. Only a year later, he was enlisted into the army.
On completion of his service, David Boyd pursued an art education at the National Gallery School in pottery. He set up a pottery studio in London and worked with his brother to promote their work through exhibitions.
Shortly after holding a major exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne in 1956, Boyd started painting a series of works that sparked controversy. The work depicted Aboriginal people as gentle people who were frightened of losing their land, an uncomfortable idea for many people at the time.
Boyd explored new techniques such as the “Sfumato” and exhibited in various spaces with some of his artwork exclusively exhibited in Newcastle, New South Wales. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in recognition for his services to art as a painter and innovator of ceramic sculpture and pottery techniques.
David Boyd’s “Memories of Childhood and the Orchard" was auctioned and sold for $44,400 on June 24, 2009.
