CHG Director's Statement: Lionel Lindsay was a prolific graphic artist, watercolorist and writer. He is widely regarded as the greatest Australian Printmaker. His works featuring Australian flora and fauna received worldwide accolade.
Lindsay's finished woodcut prints were of such quality that Harold Wright (Colnaghi Art Gallery) wrote “He has approached, if not equalled, some of the best work of this type produced in Europe in the past quarter of a century”.
Lionel travelled widely. His opinion as an Art critic with the Melbourne Herald paper was controversial and exciting, he provided great support in establishing Australian Modern artists, including Newcastle born William Dobell.
Lionel's work is represented in all major institutions in Australia. A full collection of his work is held by the British Museum.
Fun fact: In 1903 Banjo Patterson offered him a job as a cartoonist for £4 per week!
