Director's Statement: Grace Crowley is best known for her cubist paintings of the 1920's and 1930's. Crowley was influenced particularly by her studies with French Cubist painter André Lhote which focused on the importance of subsuming colour to structure.
The Crowley-Fizelle school of art, established with Rah Fizelle to teach the principles and practice of modern art according to these constructionist, cubist-inspired principles, became the centre for modernist painting in Sydney until its closure in 1937.
