CHG Director's Statement: David Strachan was an Australian painter, print-maker and teache who was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England in 1919.

Strachan's stark and elegant landscapes and symbolist inspired still life paintings were not fashionable with the avant garde, but remained highly regarded by the Trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, who twice awarded him the Wynne Prize. This is Australia's most prestigious prize for landscape painting.

In the 1960's Strachan became an inspirational teacher of printmaking to young students at East Sydney Technical College, and helped foster a new Australian generation of artists in print.

Strachan and prominent Australian artist Margaret Olley were close friends until his death in a car accident in 1970.

Strachan's work is represented in public and private collections throughout Australia.
