Artist Statement: I painted my first rainbow many years ago... one of Prime Art U.K. most successful prints. My aim at the time was to create a symbol of joy, hope, spiritual/mystical experience, words also echoed by the Queen in her unprecedented recent speech to the British Nation. I was delighted to see it adopted as the COVID 19 Rainbow worldwide as the symbol of hope. My Covid works in the gallery also are tributes to hope. The cracks in the paint represents the effect on societies everywhere but the mystical Rainbow reminds us of colour and joy in a time when so much anguish abounds, it is a fitful reassuring and comforting sign of hope. The paintings contain a mixture of paints including house paint and debris and are unvarnished, testament to my personal self isolating and inability to source products due to the lockdown. They are brutally simple in execution and are deliberately so. I've done them trying to look through the eyes of a child...the essence of the Covid Rainbow. - John Maitland.

John Maitland captures children, people, families and indigenous Australians within their environment. His compositions provide insight into the personality of those within his paintings or their connection to the landscape, giving the viewer a yearning for life's simple pleasures.
