A Summer's Day, Sydney

Artist Statement: As soon as I start to paint, I step into another world. I don't like music or sound - I feel caught up in another set of values. My best work is always spontaneous, intuitive, then it becomes so absorbing, euphoric almost, it carries you along. I've done a few paintings I've felt have come from something beyond myself, and I bow my head in thanks.

Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 120 x 150 cms
Date: 1979 Circa

CHG Directors Note: In 1979, the Sydney Morning Herald sponsored a publication titled Lloyd Rees - 'A tribute to Sydney' in conjunction with Macquarie Galleries (Now closed) to mark the exhibition of CHG- offered to Sydney clientele.

CHG Director's Statement: One of the most regarded Australian landscape artists of his time, Lloyd Rees was a talented painter, draughtsman and printmaker.

Rees twice won the Art Gallery NSW Wynne Prize for his landscape paintings. In 1950 with 'The Harbour from McMahons Point' and again in 1982 when he painted 'Morning on the Derwent'.

His painting 'Sydney' won the Commonwealth Jubilee art prize in 1951. His work is represented in all major Australian public collections.
