This series was painted between June and Sept 2022. The paintings are distillations of glimpses out my car window driving from Sydney to my studio at Wisemans Ferry. I have also used impressions of the river near my studio as a starting point for some paintings I am mesmerised by light, especially early morning and early evening, the hills of the Hawkesbury lose their form and become saturated in shadows. I overpaint until the glimpse becomes an abstraction but with unequivocal connection to the place where I had the experience, repeated working occurs until the painting has been reduced to what I feel is pure abstraction and beauty – realism to abstraction via emotion. - Phil Stallard
