CHG Director's Statement: Margaret Preston (1875 – 1963) is regarded as one of Australia’s leading modernists. She was also one of the first non-Indigenous Australian artists to use Aboriginal symbols in her art. Preston’s paintings are widely known to be vibrant and decorative and her prints are mainly of Australian subjects such as distinctive indigenous flowers, birds, animals and landscapes.
Preston was commissioned “Self Portrait 1930” by the Art Gallery of NSW in 1929, the first time a woman artist was commissioned from the Gallery. Preston also won a silver medal at the Exposition Internationale, Paris in 1937. She died in 1963 in Mosman.
