CHG Director's Statement: Sidney Nolan is arguably Australia's most internationally acclaimed artist. Kenneth Clark* refers to him "as one of the major artists of the 20th century. He is well known for dramatic shifts between dark, moody themes and bright, uplifting creations."

Major paintings of Gallipoli have mostly been absorbed by the War Museum in Canberra, this is one of the few that escaped probably as it has had an overseas provenance. The historical significance of a major Sidney Nolan work such as this cannot be undervalued. It captures the soldier’s heads highlighting the plumage from their hats, being the principal colouring.

This original painting is from a sought after era, the 1950's, considered one of the most collectable pockets for this artist. The artwork would appeal to museums and serious collectors and is in fine condition. Paintings of this importance are rarely for sale, so secure an historical early piece by this significant Australian artist, it is worth pursuing!
