CHG Directors Statement: Max Watters is a self-taught painter who has been exhibiting since 1964. He paints Upper Hunter Valley landscapes in his spare time and is also active in art groups in the region.
Max has had 21 solo exhibitions including retrospective exhibitions at the Maitland Art Gallery, Muswellbrook Art Gallery, Newcastle Region Art Gallery and Broken Hill City Art Gallery. He has been in many group exhibitions many of them investigating the parameters of naive painting.
Max was included in Landscape and Image - Australian Art of the 1970s which toured Indonesia in 1978; Artists of the Hunter Region at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1981 and The Challenge of the Landscape, New England Regional Art Museum, 1986. His work is in the Australian National Gallery and other public collections.
