CHG Director's Statement: Ralph Balson was a highly regarded modernist painter credited with holding the first solo exhibition of abstract work in Australia.

Until the end of his life, Ralph Balson remained a highly ambitious artist who explored and pushed the boundaries. He was not satisfied in working exclusively towards producing a commercially popular style of painting. Instead he restlessly strove to interpret the experience of modernity.
