Director's Statement: Australian artist Geoffrey Proud is a prolific painter who held his first solo exhibition in his late teens. He has exhibited in all Australian states and has achieved more than 85 solo exhibitions. His surreal and quirky imagery is depicted in oil and pastel with works often depicting a world of innocence inhabited by children and animals however containing an ominous edge. Other subject matter includes flowers, still life, nude studies and landscapes with highly glazed surfaces offering a magical sense of place. Geoffrey Proud alternates between expressionist impasto brushwork whilst experimenting with vibrant colour and texture. Proud has won numerous awards and is represented in many State and Regional galleries, corporate and private collections around the world. He won the Archibald Prize in 1991 with a portrait of Dorothy Hewett.
