Best known for his abstract paintings Hinder is also recognised for his camouflage designs.\u003cbr\u003eHe was a trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHinders work is held in many public galleries including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of South Australia, Australian National Gallery, Australian War Memorial and the National Gallery of Victoria. His painting may be described as tonal abstract expressionist. There is a strong religious theme throughout his work. He has been awarded various Australian art prizes, including the Blake Prize in 1960 and 1977 as co-winner. His work is represented in several state galleries and in the Newcastle Gallery. At an early age, Dobell was apprenticed as an architect to Wallace Porter. He designed quite a few buildings and War Memorials around Newcastle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDobell moved to Sydney in 1924. He studied at the Julian Ashton Art School at night. He won a traveling scholarship at the school which enabled him to visit England and Europe where he attended the Slade School of Fine Art, London.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDobell was a painter best known for his portraiture. He sometimes observed people in the street, capturing glimpses of day to day life in his art and often painted on small scale oil canvases. He was awarded the Art Gallery of NSW (AGNSW) Archibald Portrait prize three times in his career. Dobell was also greatly inspired by the works of the old masters in London and European museums\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1939, Dobell returned to Sydney where he was inspired by vivid scenes in the Kings Cross area. The Art Gallery of New South Wales recognized Dobell with a major exhibition in 1942. After winning the AGNSW Archibald prize for his highly stylized portrait of Joshua Smith, he faced criticism and controversy from conservative artists that claimed his portraits were highly ‘distorted and caricatured’. He left Australia in 1962 for Europe to pursue a career in art. During this time, he undertook numerous painting trips throughout Europe and also North Africa. ln 1981 he returned to Australia and settled with his family in Newcastle. Matthew Perceval exhibited for the very first time at the Karoly Foundation in Vence in 1968. Since then he has held over 30 exhibitions and has participated in many group shows including: Salon d'Autumne and Salon de Mai-Grand Palais, Paris. Australian Artists of Fame and Promise, NSW House, London. Shifting Ground exhibition, Art Gallery of NSW. Nobbys Collection, Newcastle Regional Art Gallery.
