He began his art career when he attended the Melba Memorial Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne at age 17. He began his art career when he attended the Melba Memorial Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne at age 17. Only a year later, he was enlisted into the army.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn completion of his service, David Boyd pursued an art education at the National Gallery School in pottery. He set up a pottery studio in London and worked with his brother to promote their work through exhibitions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShortly after holding a major exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne in 1956, Boyd started painting a series of works that sparked controversy. At an early age, Dobell was apprenticed as an architect to Wallace Porter. He designed quite a few buildings and War Memorials around Newcastle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDobell moved to Sydney in 1924. He studied at the Julian Ashton Art School at night. He won a traveling scholarship at the school which enabled him to visit England and Europe where he attended the Slade School of Fine Art, London.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDobell was a painter best known for his portraiture. He sometimes observed people in the street, capturing glimpses of day to day life in his art and often painted on small scale oil canvases. He was awarded the Art Gallery of NSW (AGNSW) Archibald Portrait prize three times in his career. Dobell was also greatly inspired by the works of the old masters in London and European museums\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1939, Dobell returned to Sydney where he was inspired by vivid scenes in the Kings Cross area. The Art Gallery of New South Wales recognized Dobell with a major exhibition in 1942. After winning the AGNSW Archibald prize for his highly stylized portrait of Joshua Smith, he faced criticism and controversy from conservative artists that claimed his portraits were highly ‘distorted and caricatured’. Dobell moved to Wangi Wangi following a nervous breakdown.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the years that followed he was awarded the AGNSW Wynne Prize and once again the Archibald for his portrait of young Margaret Olley. Streeton was a key member of the Heidelberg School of Australian Impressionism.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStreeton, along with a group of other artists, exhibited the 9 x 5 (inches) show of Impressions at Buxton's Art Gallery, Melbourne which heralded a new kind of art which was highly criticized by conservative critics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs Streeton received recognition for his work, he relocated from Melbourne to Sydney, Sydney to Cairo and then London, where he finally settled for 30 years.
