Medium: Oil on Canvas

CHG Directors Note: Private Seller

CHG Director’s Statement: Sir Arthur Earnest Streeton was one of Australia’s most successful and influential landscape painters. He received very little formal training as a painter other than night classes at the National Gallery of Victoria. Streeton was a key member of the Heidelberg School of Australian Impressionism.

Streeton, along with a group of other artists, exhibited the 9 x 5 (inches) show of Impressions at Buxton's Art Gallery, Melbourne which heralded a new kind of art which was highly criticized by conservative critics.

As Streeton received recognition for his work, he relocated from Melbourne to Sydney, Sydney to Cairo and then London, where he finally settled for 30 years. On being appointed as a war artist in France, his work began to depict the crumbling landscapes of war.

In 1928, Arthur Streeton was awarded the Art Gallery of NSW Wynne prize for landscape painting for 'Afternoon Light: the Goulburn Valley'. By this time he had become an internationally acclaimed painter, an art critic for a local newspaper and was also knighted in 1937.

In 2016, Sydney Harbour 1907 by Arthur Streeton, which shows the city from Mosman, sold for a record breaking $2.07 million at Sotheby’s auction.
