Shaddy Frangipani

Artist Statement: The frangipani has become one of my personal motifs for innocence and freedom. In winter, they stand lonely and bare, their smooth branches intrigue with endless shapes and shadows. The frangipani in this work is just coming into bloom. All summer long children stop and admire the frangipani in my front yard, taking its blossoms, climbing its trunk, poking the flowers behind their ears and, of course, taking shade from the harsh sun. Here the mother has stopped for respite from the heat, while her children excitedly admire the first flowers of the season.

Medium: Mixed Media on Board
Dimensions: 120.5 x 80 cms
Condition: Good

Directors Statement: John Maitland is considered by some “one of Australia’s most exciting artists” (John Norris, Prime Arts Publishing), while his works have been referred to as “possessing the exquisite line and colour of a Matisse”.

John Maitland captures children, people, families and indigenous Australians within their environment. His compositions provide insight into the personality of those within his paintings or their connection to the landscape, giving the viewer a yearning for life's simple pleasures. His figurative paintings are colourful, alluring, ethereal, dreamy and command a strong following.
