CHG Director's Statement: Alun Leach-Jones studied at the Liverpool College of Arts (U.K). In 1964, he began to develop the system of painting small, vermicular shapes within a circle within a square, which became known as hi 'Nounmenon Format' or series, shown in a large number of exhibitions both in Australia and overseas including representation in 1969 Bienale de Sao Paula and The Field, 1968. Ultimately, the format became restrictive and he changed to a freer style. His abstract form-filled circular motifs became extremely distinctive and he transformed them into both prints, tapestries and later sculptures with great success. He held 70 solo exhibitions 1964 - 2006 including in Sydney, Melbourne, and in the UK, Europe and US. His work was included in many significant group print and painting exhibitions in Australia and other countries including Europe, Japan and US. Leach-Jones passed away in December, 2017.
