CHG Director's Statement: Tom Gleghorn’s first solo exhibition of paintings was held at Newcastle Art Gallery in 1959. The show was opened by an admirer and collector of Gleghorn’s paintings, the Nobel Prize- winning writer Patrick White.
This painting is in perfect condition retaining the original frame. It is easily identifiable with the late 1950’s work with similar tone and colouring, particularly comparative with ‘Trawler wharf’ 1959. As much of his art produced then was influenced by Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, it is reasonable to assume this artwork was influenced also from the region.
